How do students register for classes?

Students register for classes by last name on a scheduled appointment date via a program called CPReg. Prior to registering, students can plan possible schedules using a tool called PASS (Plan a Student Schedule). Both systems are accessed online through theCal Poly Portal. Registration information, including appointment dates, is also available on the Academic Records Web site at: www.ess.calpoly.edu/_records. Click on "Registration."

Do students need computers?

A number of computer labs are available for students on campus. A student’s need for a computer is dependent upon his or her degree program.

Where can students get career counseling?

The Career Services Center provides counseling to assist students with change-of-major decisions, career planning, job searches, resume writing and interviewing skills. Career Services also offers career workshops, job fairs, a job listings service, and a career and graduate school library.

What is the Graduation Writing Requirement (GWR)?

The GWR demonstrates competency in writing skills and is mandatory for graduation. Students who have completed 90 units may fulfill the GWR by enrolling in a specified upper division literature or writing course, or by passing the Writing Proficiency Examination (WPE).

What happens if a student fails a class?

Students should talk with instructors before their grades slip to a point of failure. Up to 20 units of coursework can be repeated where a grade of D+ or less has been earned. Any course is eligible for grade forgiveness one time only. If the repeated grade is equal to or higher than the original grade, the original grade will be "forgiven" from GPA computation, but both grades will appear on the student’s permanent record.

Why would a student choose to take a class "credit/no credit"?

Students may take up to 16 units "credit/no credit." The credit/no credit grade does not affect the GPA. Check the Cal Poly catalog for guidelines specific to each major for taking classes "credit/no credit."

Do students need to apply for financial aid and scholarships every year?

Yes. The priority-filing period is January - March 2nd for the following academic year. Students and parents need a personal identification number (PIN) from the Department of Education to sign the FAFSA or access a renewal FAFSA on the Web. For a PIN see: www.pin.ed.gov.

How can students find jobs while going to school?

"Mustang Jobs" is a search tool offered by Career Services. It lists part-time and full-time positions, including student employment, internships, cooperative education opportunities and career positions. See: www.careerservices.calpoly.edu and click on "For Students."

ASI lists on-campus part-time jobs annually for student employees in the University Union, the Recreation Center or the Orfalea Family and ASI Children’s Center. See: www.asi.calpoly.edu/hr.

The Cal Poly Corporation lists jobs with Campus Dining and the Cal Poly bookstore. See: www.calpolycorporation.org. Click on "Human Resources," then "Employment."

What resources are available to help students plan for off-campus living?
