Inclusive Excellence

Inclusive Excellence
– The integration of diversity and quality initiatives. Much like the forging of elements into an alloy, Inclusive Excellence produces something that is both different and stronger and more durable.

Hut and LandscapeIn furthering Cal Poly’s commitment to creating a welcoming environment for all, some 40 of Cal Poly’s executive leadership, including many Student Affairs administrators, department heads and others, attended a two-day Inclusive Excellence Summit. The retreat was sponsored by the Status of Women Committee, University Diversity Enhancement Council, and the Council on University Citizenship, with the focus of implementing the Association of American Universities & Colleges, “Inclusive Excellence,” model at Cal Poly. The retreat participants also heard from a panel of Cal Poly students who quite passionately and articulately spoke about their experiences as students of color and LGBT students. The Inclusive Excellence Summit is not an end, but the beginning of an exciting and creative process to intentionally integrate diversity and quality initiatives into curricular and co-curricular activities on campus.

(The workshop has not yet occurred at the time of this writing). Mun-Wah may be best known for his thought-provoking film series, “The Color of Fear,” and is expected to facilitate participants’ appreciation for the complexity of issues of diversity as well as encourage our own listening to others’ stories.
